Dr. Malcom W. P. Strandberg, Professor of Physics Emeritus, at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, is a noted authority on microwave physics and the physics of biological systems.

Born in Box Elder---48 19N, 110W---, Montana, 9 March 1919, Dr. Strandberg received his B.S. degree summa cum laude from Harvard College in 1941, and his Ph.D. degree from M.I.T. in January 1948. From 1941 to 1945 he was a staff member of the M.I.T. Radiation Laboratory, engaged in advanced development work on microwave radar. Dr. Strandberg spent the year, November 1942 to September 1943 on detached duty in Gt. Malvern, England, as a Visiting Scientist, working on radar counter measures for the Royal Air Force. A research assistant in physics from 1945 to 1948, he was appointed assistant professor of physics in 1948, associate professor in 1953 and professor of physics in 1960.

He was head of a research group in microwave spectroscopy and solid state physics in the Research Laboratory of Electronics at M.I.T.; and has published extensively in this field including a book, "Microwave Spectroscopy" which was published in 1954 and in a Russian translation in 1956. Since 1965 his research interests have included the physics of biological systems, and he has published extensively in that field.

Dr. Strandberg was elected Fellow of the American Physical Society, 1957, American Academy of Arts and Sciences, 1957, American Association for the Advancement of Science, 1959, Institute of Radio Engineers, (now named the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers), 1959, and Honorary Active Member of the New York Academy of Arts and Sciences, 1957. He was elected, in the Senior 16, to the Phi Beta Kappa Alpha Chapter of Massachusetts at Harvard College, 1940, and Sigma Xi of M.I.T., 1948.

He served as a Visiting Scientist representing the American Institute of Physics, 1957-59, and 1963-64. He was a Fulbright Lecturer at the University of Grenoble, Grenoble, France, 1961-62. He was a member of the National Academy of Sciences Panels Advisory to the National Bureau of Standards, Panel 90-91-92, 1964-67, and Member, Board of Directors of the Parents Association, Syracuse University, 1962-66. He was appointed NATO Professor at the University of Palermo, Sicily, Italy, for the Spring term 1970. In 1970 he was appointed Professeur Invité at the University of Geneva, Geneva, Switzerland. He was in residence there during the Fall term of that year.

Dr. Strandberg has served often as a technical consultant to industry and government laboratories. He is the inventor on record and holder of ten patents.

Dr. Strandberg was married to the former Harriet Elisabeth Bennett, now deceased. Their children are Josiah R. W., Susan Abby, Elisabeth G. Stith, and Malcom B. To go to The Strandberg Family Web page click HERE.

Dr. Strandberg resided in Cambridge, Massachusetts until 2013 when he moved to Wellesley. He passed away on May 3 2015 ( 96 years). MIT Physics reemembrance..
